Charles W. Bumpass at Bumpass, Va. in 1915. He said the town was 50 miles west of
Richmond, Va.
LAB: I lived about 30 miles west of Bumpass for 2 1/2 years. During that time I
had the pleasure of visiting in Mineral, Va. which is about 5 miles west of Bumpass,
Va. with David Everette Bumpass, (g.p 9.1115). Though the visit was quite brief I had
the good fortune of learning where some of the cemeteries were located, thus I did go
to find and get information from the gravestones that were in these cemeteries. One
of these cemeteries is located about 1/2 mile back in the woods from three of the one
time Bumpass homes. In this cemetery gravestones read as follows; Pauline Celeste
wife of C. W. Bumpass, Sr. b. 6-12-1850, d. 7-3-1928.; C.W. Bumpass b. 6-18-1848, d.
6-4-1909. The cemetery is enclosed inside a chain link in the end of the woods.

Behind the old Bumpass house, on the left side, as one crosses the R.R. tracks
when leaving Bumpass to the north, is an old cemetery located in the edge of the
woods. In this cemetery is two gravestones that read; John T. Bumpass, Jr., May 13,
1861, August 1, 1933.; Mary R. Bumpass May 18, 1872, Jan. 20, 1944. I believe that
these stones are John, Jr.(g.p 8.1366) and his wife. John T., the s. of John, Sr. who
was known as Capt. Tom(g.p 7.1008). According to CHB they had no issue, however
there are several other markers in this cemetery that are so weather worn and broken
that no information is available from them. Believing that the information from these
stones is accurate then the name of John, Jr's. wife would be Mary R. Werner, the
name obtained from the recordings of CHB.

Alfred was b. at Fabius, Onondaga Co., N.Y. in one of the Bumpus houses on
Academy St. The house he was born in used to be a dwelling but later was converted
in to a building for curing hops, thus it was known when I was young as the old hop
house. He died in Syracuse, N.Y and is buried in Fabius Evergreen Cemetery, Fabius,
N.Y. In his early life he helped his father work the farm on Ridge Road, Fabius, N.Y.
Later he was educated to be a school teacher and evidently
found this vocation not
to his liking, thus he worked at and became an excellent carpenter and builder. Many
schools, courthouses and other buildings of significance can be credited to his ability
to supervise their construction, one being the Fabius Central School which faces on
Main Street, Fabius, N.Y. He lived in the family home that was built by his
grandfather, Hiram Abiff Bumpus and is located on the easterly part of Main Street,
across from M. G. Shea Store. Alfred m. Minnie V. Kirkby, dau.
of Levi and Margaret
Kirkby. This marriage ended in divorce. Minnie is buried in Fabius Evergreen
Cemetery, Fabius, N.Y. Minnie was born at Gouvernour, N.Y.
Alfred's occupations; Farmer, Carpenter and General Construction.
I, Lynn Albert Bumpus, remember my Uncle well He was a very tall man, even
though in his late years he was a little hunched over, he still stood a good six feet.
When I was a lad of about fourteen and fifteen years of age my Uncle hired me to
take care of his chickens which numbered five hundred in size of the flock. The
reason that he hired me was so that I could earn spending money and also that he
could keep the chickens while he was working out of town for the Irish Construction
Company. At the time, I was studying agriculture in High School and with the
instructions of my uncle and I applying some of what I was learning in school, take
care of has chickens I did. From these five hundred chickens I was getting five
hundred eggs a day average, which meant that some of these chickens were laying
two eggs a day. I had to gather all of the eggs every day, candle, weigh and sort the
eggs and place them in egg crates ready for the truck to pack up each Monday
morning. The cracked and cull eggs were delivered to the store across the street that
was run by Michael R. Shea. My Uncle returned home every two weeks to see how
things were going and to order any needed grains, etc. that were required. He would
usually be home for two days and these two days I would have off. He would take
care of the chickens for the two days and then I had them back for the next two
weeks. During the two days the chickens would drop off in production. Before my
Uncle would leave he would always, it seems, give me a lecture to the effect that I
was wasting the mash grain by filling the hoppers too full which he could tell because
he could find to much of it on the floor around the hoppers. I always would be told
that I was putting to much scratch grain in the litter, however, the next day after he
left I would always find that there was no scratch feed left in the litter and the mash
hoppers were empty, so, I would go back to filling the hoppers as I thought was right
and throwing scratch grain into the litter the same way. The chickens would come
right back to the normal five hundred eggs average a day. This job lasted for about
two years and due to bad times of the depression my Uncle finally came home to stay
where he spent the rest of his life.
I saw my Uncle quite often up until his death in 1951. After he took to his last
illness and before he went to the hospital he asked my aunt to tell me that he wanted
to see me. Naturally I went to see him to find out what he wanted. He said "Lynn, at
one time you took care of my chickens and I just wanted you to know that during that
time I made the most money on them that I ever made on raising chickens even though
I don't know quite why." I replied to my uncle, "Well I fed them." His reply was "You
surely did, you surely did." This little visit to my uncle was the last time that I saw
him alive. I will never forget it.
The old home that my uncle lived in is still standing in good order on Main
Street, Fabius, N.Y. and is occupied by my Cousin Geraldine Margaret(Bumpus) Streiff.

Rev. George Harrison, Mister of the Gospel
George was b. at Fabius, Onondaga Co., N.Y. in the house on Academy Street

This house was later converted into a building for curing hops and was known as the

and though most of his children were raised during the great depression of the 1930's
they did not lack greatly for either. He ran the farm on Ridge Road north of Fabius,
N.Y., as did his father before him. His mainstay of income on the farm was from a
dairy herd and the milk from them provided his main income. He also raised crops such
at cabbage and potatoes that when the price was right provided additional income.
After his death in 1936 his wife, Ella, took over supervision of the farm and Justin,
the eldest son, continued to operate the farm and to help to care for and look after
the younger children. Justin still owns and operates the farm to this day, 1985.
