              The following is an excellant example of an indentured out person to learn a

         trade, This person being the above subject (g.p 7.36) Shipley Wilson Bumpus.

         This indenture witnesseth that Hulda Bumpus of Fairhaven in the County of

         Bristol widow and mother of Shipley W. Bumpus, a minor under the age of twenty one

         years, doth by these presents bind Shipley W. Bumpus, a minor and with the free will

         and consent of S.W.B. is here bound as an apprentice to Mr. Wm. T. Cook of New Bedford

         in the County of Bristol, State of Massachusetts, to learn the art, trade or

         mystery of a Sail Maker to serve from the sixteenth day of October in the year of

         our Lord 1839 when the sail apprentice will arrive at the age of twenty one years.

         During all which time the said apprentice, his said master will and shall faithfully

         serve, his secrets keep, his lawful commands duly obey. He do no damage to his said

         master, nor suffer it to be done by others, without giving resonable notice to

         his said master.

              He shall not waste the goods of his said master, nor lend them unlawfully to

         others.  At cards, dice or any unlawful game, he shall not play.  He shall not

         absent himself by day or night, from the service of his said master, without his leave;

         matrimony within said term; nor shall he commit any acts of vice or immortality which

         are fobidden by the laws of the commonwealth; but in all things, at all times, he

         shall carry and behave himself towards his said master and all others, as a good and

         faithful apprentice ought to do, all the term of afore said.

              And the said William T. Cook doth hereby covenent and promise to teach and

         instruct the said apprentice to be instructed in the art, trade or calling of a Sail

         Maker by the way or best means he may or can(if the said apprentice be capable to

         learn:) and during said term to provide said apprentice with suitable meat, drink,

         washing and lodging in sickness and in health during the aforesaid term and to pay

         him thirty dollars a year, in lue of finding him his clothes-provided he live to the end

         of the year in which he may commence and to school him-three months each year at

         some suitable evening school or cause him to be scholled.

              In testamony whereof, the said parties have to this, and one other indenture, of

         the same tenor and date, interchangeably set their hands and seals, the twelth day-of

         December in-the year of our Lord, One Thousand, Eight hundred and Thirty Four.

             Hist. of Coos Co., N.H.: Lot #16, range, commenced by Silas Bumpus about 1800

       and bought by Levi Lowe in 1818.

          One Jesse Bumpus(g.p 5.26/gp. 6.95) was an early settler of Randolf and built a log

       cabin there.  Silas Bumpus built on the next lot to Jesse about 1800.  There is a

       Bumpus (basin) ravine on Mt. Madison.  Silas Bumpus' house was on Randalf Hill

       near the present Mt. Cresant House. Silas Bumpus was Town Clerk

       of Randolf in 1825 and Selectman in 1827 and again in 1833.

       Mn. In the 1850 census of Milo, Me.  Asa W. is 60yrs. old.  In 1860 census of Milo is

       78yrs old.  I believe the latter to be correct.

            Sold land in, Milo Apr. 17, 1824 and bought land in Williamburg the same day.

       Bought land in Williamburg in 1827; in Brownville 1836-40, all recorded in Dover.

          Early Town records of Williamburg, Me.; Asa W. Bumps and his family removed

       from Milo and settled in this Town Apr. 24, 1824. "Aaron Day Bumps, s. of A.W.

       Bumps b. in Williamburg Mar. 23, 1826".  Asa W. Bumps, with his family removed from

       this Town to Brownville, Jan. 1838.  Mrs. Cora Albro, dau. of Sally(Sarah) is living in

       Brownville, Me(1939), aged 85yrs.  She states that Asa m. Mary Tibbetts and went

       West and d. in Mn. All her records were destroyed when her home was burned 20yrs. ago.

       She had several children and a grandson, who answered by letter.
