Peterboro, Nov. 28' '70(1870)
Mr. Bumpus
Dear Sir
Yours of the 26th is received- I doubt not that you have been very kind to Mrs
Hatch and will say to you she was not thrown upon the town atall, except at her
death. Mr. Madison applied to me for assistance, & I saw Mr. Booth before purchasing
burial things for her- he said not to get as for a pauper but good things as would be
necessary and he thought you would pay the bills, I did so and am glad of your
promptness enableing me to meet the debt for which I became responsible. Doctor
Douglas attended Lydia Hatch in her last sickness and thining it would be right to
have some pay mentioned it to me- The poormaster of this place allow a Phissician to
attend a patient three times before making any formal application to the town, This
bill was so small I thought you would to pay the whole rather than to have any town
charge.
Doc Douglas is not a very forehanded man. He needs all his dues.
Yours Very Trully
Reuben Gordon.
P.S Please send me the money and I will pay the Doctor and send you a reciet. I think
this be be the last bill you will ever have to pay for Lydia Hatch. Please write on
return mail- Yours, R.G.
Peterboro, N.Y.

Mr. Hiram Bumpus
Dear Sir
When Mr. Gordon sent you the acct of expences respecting your mother an
of kind of $5.00 was not added to the other.
It is for medical attention to your mother & medicines furnished.
I should be very glad if you would forward it to me.
Respectfully
A.S. Douglas, M.D.
There is another letter in the possession of Winnefred Gladys(Bumpus) Lewis
which was written to Hiram Abiff Bumpus by his mother that mentions that she misses
seeing her children. This indicates that there was more than one child. I have not
been able to find any information on any other children. She does mention in the
letter Salathiel but it does not really say that he was a child of hers. I have included
the above letters as there has been some question as to the name of Jesse Bumpus'
wife. Evidently Lydia's father was still alive at her death as a Mr. Booth is mentioned
in one of the above
Per CHB: Jesse d. at Nelson, N.Y. and m. Lydia Booth. He resided a few miles
east of Cazenovia at a place called Nelson Flats, Nelson, Madison Co., N.Y. He was a farmer.
Jesse was a soldier in the war of 1812. He was a private in Capt. John P.
Schuyler's Co., N.Y., Militia, Col. Dutton. He was a substitute for Joshua Whitney who
was drafted at Nelson. Pension record. Served 3 mo's. and honorably discharged at
Houndsville, N. Y.
Jesse died when his son Hiram was small Hiram's mother was a tailoress by trade.
page 076
page 077
g.f g.p name born died
She was poor and was unable to support herself and her son, Hiram. Hiram then lived
with his Uncle Jim(James Bumpus, b. Feb. 29, 1796) until he was about 14 yrs. old,
when he was bound out to a man in Utica and worked for his board and clothes to to
learn cabinet making.
Jesse's wife married again a man named Elnathan Hatch. Elnathan evidently died
before Lydia as Hiram, her son, became responsible for her doctor and burial
expences.
Jesse is evidently buried in Nelson Rural Cemetery, Nelson, N.Y. "There
are many stones missing in this cemetery, also the records are missing or have some
how been destroyed" or he may have been buried in Wyss or (Mutton Hill) Cemetery
"as it is sometime called" where many stones are now also missing and records for this
cemetery are also not found. I would think, though, that he is buried in the Nelson
Rural Cemetery.

James Bumpus lived in the Town of Fenner, N.Y. on a farm that is located about
a mile north of the village of Nelson, N.Y. This farm is presently, Oct. 14, 1982,
occupied by Delos Fay Davies(g.p 9.18) the son of Enan M. Davies and Jessie
D.(Bumpus) Davies. The buildings, at least part of them, are believed to be the
originals built on this property and are for their age in exceptionally good condition.
These buildings and the property are the same as purchased by Seth(g.p 5.33) Bumpus
in 1799. The buildings were built by Seth and his sons.
James Bumpus, a farmer, evidently raised sheep and sold or spun the wool. A
letter written by Josephine Van Horn to her cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Bumpus, Friday
June 28th., 1923 states that she remembers most of them well and as a little girl
when she used to visit at her Uncle James's, he would have the back chamber packed
with wool from floor to ceiling. She also mentions that Emma Bumpus married Wallace
Poole and that they lived at Poolville, N.Y.
James Bumpus, upon the death of his brother Jesse, took Hiram Abiff Bumpus, son
of Jesse to raise. This was upon the request of Lydia, Jesse's wife who later married
Elnathan Batch.
James was b. at Granville, Ma., d. at Fenner, N.Y., m. Eliza, dau. of Zelotus
Caswell. Eliza was b. and d. at Fenner, N.Y. They resided at Fenner, N.Y. near
Cazenovia, N.Y. He was a farmer.
Probate record Oct. 18, 1871. Eliza A. Bumpus and Augustus H. Bumpus
Executors. Heirs; Eliza A. Bumpus, widow, Fenner, N.Y.; Polly M. Stevens, dau.
Fenner, N.Y.; Pelig Bumpus, son, SanFrancisco, Ca.; E. Delos Bumpus, son, West
Walrath, N.Y.: Augustus H. Bumpus, son, Fenner, N.Y.; Henry A. Bumpus, son, Nelson, N.Y.
Census 1850 says James was b. in Mass. He came from Mass. with his parents in
1798 settling at Nelson, N.Y., removed to Fenner, N.Y. in 1823. Census of 1850 says
Peleg, Polly, Augustus, Merchant and Henry A. were all b. in N.Y. State.

Huldah, his wife is buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Rochester, N.Y. They resided at
Acushnet, Mass. Huldah was b. at New Bedford, Ma.
Seth had a tannery and farm at Acushnet, Ma. Was a land owner in Acushnet in
1801. His widow sold it in 1848. He manufactured shoes which he took to Natchez,
Miss. to sell. While on one of these trips he was taken ill with yellow fever and died.
Huldah went to Victor, N.Y. after Seth's death to line with her son, I believe Shipley.
War of 1812; Raised at Fairhaven, Capt. Swift. 1805, Seth on assessment roll
1815, Seth on Artillery Roll.
The Seth Bumpus Family chart from Ward and Lois Bumpus of Victor, N.Y. gives
the names of three more children of Seth; Isaac, Henry, Morris or Moses. I do not
think this to be true as I have not found in any other authority an indication that
there were any more children of Seth, than listed above.

I would assume that all of Marcus' children were by his 2nd wife due to the
death date of his 1st wife and the birth dates of his children.
Gravestones in the old cemetery on the east side of the village of DeRuyter, N.Y.
say: Marcus Bump b. Oct. 11, 1803, died July 26, 1871. Julia Clement wife of Marcus
Bump born Jan. 22, 1806 died Feb. 19, 1879. Elizabeth wife of Marcus Bump died Oct.
9, 1829 aged 32 years. Mary Ann wife of Marcus Bump died Oct. 7, 1858 aged 57 years.
Per CHB: Marcus was b. at Wareham, Ma. and d. at DeRuyter, N.Y. His 2nd wife
was at Hastings, N.Y. Aug. 29, 1830. Some of his dates do not agree with the dates as
shown on gravestones if the ages and life span are taken into consideration. Sometime
the engravings on gravestones are not correct or weather worn so that they are not
legible, thus this may be the difference.
Burials are at DeRuyter, N.Y. Marcus resided at DeRuyter, N.Y. and CHB
indicates that the old home of Lot and Marcus Bump is opposite the cemetery.
Marcus m.3, Julia Clement Oct. 25, 1859, (b. 1806, d. 1879).
Probate records show heirs of Marcus as follows; Julia Bump, widow, DeRuyter,
N.Y., Joseph W. Bump, son, of Clyde, Il. Charles F. Bump, son, of Elm Grove, Neb.,
Mary E Ward, dau., of Clyde, Il.
